International Seminar on Industrial Property Policies

The International Seminar on Industrial Property Policies was held on 8-9 November 2012 in Ankara, Turkey as a part of Technical Cooperation among Patent Institutes of OIC Member States Project. The Meeting was hosted by the Turkish Patent Institute (TPI). Senior representatives of the national patent institutes in OIC member countries, as well as the relevant OIC institutions, were among the attendees of the Meeting. SESRIC was represented at the Meeting by Mr. Hakan Huseyin Eryetli, Director of Training and Technical Cooperation Department, and Mr. Mustafa Sahin, Centre’s Atlas Project Manager.

The two-day meeting was inaugurated with the opening remarks of Prof. Dr. Habip ASAN, President of the TPI, along with the representatives of the WIPO, TIKA, and SESRIC. In the opening ceremony Mr Eryetli delivered the statement of Dr. Savas Alpay, Director General of SESRIC, and emphasized the importance of innovation and industrial property rights protection. He also underlined that the development pace of a country cannot be accelerated and competitive edge cannot be caught in any area including science and technology without investing in the human capital. In this regard, Mr. Eryetli touched on the capacity-building programs and technical training projects implemented by SESRIC in order to transfer knowledge and expertise from one country to another.

Representatives of more than 20 OIC Member States and participant from countries like Japan and Germany made deliberation on subjects such as enhancing collaboration and cooperation among Member States and development of strategic policy tools in industrial property rights. The Meeting also hosted a half day gathering of the First Meeting of Industrial Property Rights Coordination Committee of ECO Member States which was organised by TPI.

During the Meeting, Mr. Sahin briefed the participants on the Atlas Islamic World and Science Project of the Centre, including its relevant finding in regards to Industrial property policies.
