Second Meeting of OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET)

The second meeting of OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET) has successfully been organized by SESRIC, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety (DGOHS) operating under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of the Republic of Turkey (MoLSS), on 4-6 March 2013, in Ankara, Turkey.

The meeting took place with the participation of high and medium level experts of occupational health and safety from 17 OIC Member Countries, namely, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brunei Darussalam, Iraq, Indonesia, Jordan Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine, Uganda, Yemen, Togo, Qatar, Kuwait and Turkey.

The main objectives of the Second Meeting of Occupational Safety and Health Network were to review the progress of the actions and activities accomplished since the Kick-off Meeting held in Ankara, Republic of Turkey on 16-17 May 2011 and discuss the modalities of closer collaboration in on-going OIC-OSHNET projects, as well as to draft an action plan for the coming period until the next meeting. The meeting also discussed the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Regulation, Risk Assessment in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Market Surveillance of PPE at the MoLSS.

At the opening session, Mr. Kasım Özer, the Director General of the DGOHS, expressed the satisfaction from hosting the event. In his inaugural address, Mr. Hüseyin Hakan Eryetli, Director of Training & Technical Cooperation Department (SESRIC) welcomed the participants of this significant gathering and expressed SESRIC’s gratitude to DGOHS and the MoLSS for their cooperation in the implementation of this important meeting. Mr. Eryetli underlined the significance of consolidating the existing relationships between member countries further within the context of generating common interests in protecting workers and seeking solutions to improve workplace safety in OIC Member Countries.

Mr. Eryetli also remarked that OIC-OSHNET not only aims to provide a platform to discuss the ways and means of effective collaboration towards understanding of the current situation at the country and regional level, but also expands the culture of prevention and thus occupational safety and health. Mr. Eryetli stated that since beginning of the OIC-OSHNET Kick–Off meeting that was held in Ankara, Turkey, on 16-17 May 2011, successful projects have already been accomplished and have become full-fledged programmes such as OIC Capacity Building Programme for Occupational Safety and Health (OSHCaB).

At the opening session, Mr. Fatih Acar, Undersecretary of the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security, welcomed the representatives of the OIC Member Countries and expressed the Ministry’s compliments regarding the establishment of the OIC-OSHNET among the occupational safety and health professionals. Mr. Acar accentuated the importance of collaboration among OIC Member Countries in the field of OSH. He noted that we are the members of a religion that states “Whoever saves a soul is deemed as if he had saved all the people.” and concluded his speech reiterating the importance of solidarity and taking concrete steps among OIC Member Countries and his Ministry’s willingness to stand alongside the Countries, in this period of difficulties and hardship.

The participants expressed their satisfaction for the implemented activities and the meeting and adopted a number of recommendations regarding the establishment of a working group to work on five years plan of action for the OIC-OSHNET for the period of 2014-2019 and the enhancement of the OIC OSHNET Portal, designation of NFP’s for the OIC-OSHNET and preparation of country profiles. As part of the programme, participants also visited the testing facilities of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), Department of Market Surveillance and witnessed the test of various PPE’s at DGOHS in Ankara.
