Date : 22-24 October 2013 Venue : Jakarta Indonesia

The 4th Session of the Islamic Conference of Ministers of Health, which is held in Jakarta on 22-24 October 2013, adopted the OIC Strategic Health Programme of Action 2014-2023 (OIC-SHPA), which was prepared and submitted by SESRIC.

The OIC-SHPA has been prepared by SESRIC in collaboration with OIC member countries and relevant international organizations with a view to strengthening and enhancing cooperation and collaboration on various health issues at both OIC and international level. In the light of the current health status of OIC member countries and magnitude of their health problems, the OIC-SHPA identifies six thematic areas for cooperation and joint action: (1) Health System Strengthening, (2) Disease Prevention and Control, (3) Maternal, New-born and Child Health and Nutrition, (4) Medicine, Vaccine and Medical Technologies, (5) Emergency Health Response and Interventions, and (6) Information, Education, Research and Advocacy.

Under each of these six thematic areas of cooperation, the OIC-SHPA identifies certain programmes of actions and activities to be implemented collectively by the OIC member countries and the relevant OIC and international institutions with a view to strengthening the health systems and enhancing the quality of health services in the member countries. SESRIC, in collaboration with the lead countries of the six thematic areas of cooperation, has coordinated the preparation of the implementation plan of the OIC-SHPA, which constitute an integral part of the programme. Together these two documents have been submitted and adopted by the ministers of health of the OIC member countries during the 4th Session of the Islamic Conference of Health Ministers, which is held in Jakarta on 22-24 October 2013.

In addition to the submission and presentation of the OIC-SHPA and its Implementation Plan, SESRIC has actively participated in the 4th Islamic Conference of Ministers of Health through submitting other technical background reports and making presentations on the subjects of various working sessions and panel discussions during the Conference. In this context, SESRIC has also prepared and submitted one of the main technical background reports of the Conference; the OIC Health Report 2013, which will be launched during the Conference. Another technical report on one of the main agenda items of the Conference has been also prepared by SESRIC and submitted to the Conference. This report, which is titled “Vaccines need Assessment in OIC Member Countries”, elaborates on current status of vaccine production and procurement mechanism, immunization coverage trends, and financial resource requirement for the five WHO’s Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) vaccines in OIC member countries.

SESRIC also participated in the panel on “Maternal and Child Health”, which was held during the Conference on Wednesday 23 October. In this panel, SESRIC made a presentation titled “Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in OIC Member Countries”. This presentation is based on the SESRIC technical report titled “The State of Maternal and Newborn Health in OIC Member Countries”, which has been also circulated during the Conference. SESRIC has also coordinated on Wednesday 23 October the Panel Discussion on the subject of one important agenda item of the Conference named “Health Life Styleand Non-Communicable Diseases Control”. In this Panel, SESRIC also made presentation titled “Tobacco Use and Control in OIC Member Countries”.
